37 Şubat 2014’te Bursa, “yılın en önemli 10 keşfi” listesine adını yazdırdı. Kentin isteye 7. sıradan girmesini sağlayan keşif, İznik Gölü’nde bulunan batık bir bazilikaydı. İznik’in tarihi ve kültürel değerini katlayan, Bursa’ya bir sualtı müzesi kazandıran bazilika göl kıyısının 20 metre açığında, yaklaşık 2 metre derinlikte bulundu. Yaklaşık 1600 yıl önce Romalı bir asker tarafından genç yaşta öldürülen Neophytos için yaptırıldığı biliniyor. Aziz Neophytos adına inşa edildiği ve 740’taki depremle birlikte sulara gömüldüğü tahmin ediliyor. Mezarlarından birinin kapağının açık olması ise Aziz Neophytos’un naaşının, büyük depremin ardından yine İznik içinde başka bir kiliseye taşındığını kanıtlıyor. Amerika Arkeoloji Enstitüsü’nün yayınladığı, alanında dünya çapında bir otorite kabul edilen Archaeology Dergisi tarafından yılın, dünya çapındaki en önemli 10 keşfinden biri olarak gösterilen bazilika, yüzlerce yıl In 2014 February, Bursa entered the list of, “10 most important discoveries of the year”. The discovery that placed the city in the list from the 7th row was a sunken basilica discovered at İznik Lake. The basilica that enhanced the historical and cultural values of İznik and gave it an underwater museum was discovered 20 meters away from the lake shore at a depth of 2 meters. It is known to have been built approximately 1600 years ago for Neophytos who was killed by a Roman soldier. It is assumed that the basilica has been built in the name of Saint Neophytos and sank under water as a result of the earthquake in 740. The fac tthat one of the graves has been left open proves that Saint Neophytos’ corpse was taken to another church in İznik following the earthquake.
