49 Bursaspor’un maçlarını izlemeye giderdim. Birçok amatör takımda kümelerde oynadım. Amatör olarak en son Bursa Gençlerbirliği’nde bir sene oynadım. Bursa Gençlerbirliği’nde oynarken Metin Oktay beni görmüş izlemiş, bende ışık görüp “Bu çocuğu Bursaspor’a alın” demesiyle 18 yaşındayken Bursaspor’a transfer oldum. Metin Oktay ve onunla geçirdiğiniz zaman size neler kattı? Ondan çok şey öğrendim. Türkiye’nin gelmiş geçmiş en iyi oyuncularından biri. “Sırtın kaleye dönükken bile kaleyi görmen gerekiyor, arkanda da gözün olacak” derdi. Topa nasıl vurmam gerektiğini, destek ayağımı nerede kullanmam gerektiğini söylerdi. Bendeki isteği, arzuyu görüyordu. Kendimi geliştirmek için defalarca antrenman yapardım. Milli takımda ilk kez forma giydiğiniz dönemle günümüzü karşılaştırdığınızda ne gibi farklar görüyorsunuz? O dönemde Bursa’dan Eskişehir’e oradan trenle İstanbul’a gidiyorduk. Sahalar berbat durumdaydı. Çamurdan topun yürümediği sahalarda oynuyorduk. Büyüklerimizin durumu bizden daha kötüydü. Saha, tesis, malzeme imkanları çok kısıtlıydı. Bir formayı 3-4 sene giyiyorlardı. Ama o dönemin futbolcuları şimdi olsa hepsi Avrupa’da top oynardı. Bursaspor’da oynadığınız dönemlerde başka kulüplerden transfer teklifi aldınız mı? Avrupa’dan 3 teklif aldım, İstanbul takımlarından da defalarca teklif geldi, gitmedim. Şimdiki futbolcuların elinde imkân olsa belki giderler. “Niye gideyim?” dedim. What do you see when you compare the first time you played for the National team and today? At that time we would go to Eskişehir from Bursa and then to Istanbul by train. The soccer fields were horrible. We were playing on fields where the ball would not move because of the mud. The situation was even worse for our older brothers. Fields, facilities and materials were all very limited. They wore a single shirt for up to 3-4 years. But if those players were born today, they would be playing in Europe right now. Did you receive any offer from other teams when you were playing for Bursaspor? I got 3 offers from Europe and many offers came from teams in İstanbul as well, but I refused them. Players of today would perhaps accept such offers if they had the chance. I always said: “Why should I do that?”. I was born and raised in Bursa, became a legend in Bursa. “I’m a child of Bursa” I said. And I decided to stay. I would do the same thing today, I don’t regret it. I won a cup then quit soccer. How do you evaluate the infrastructure in Turkey? There is a lot that’s lacking. That is actually my main reason to step away from soccer. Throughout my soccer life, I always wanted a good infrastructure, I always said “How can we do better?”, but nobody was listening. Turkish teams were unable to get rid of debts because of their foreign player obsession. Once, there were more Turkish players in Europe. Do you have a favorite Turkish player? There is not a single player in Turkey who would be worth 10 million including me. Players are getting ridiculous prices like 1 billlion and they don’t deserve that. Because of such prices, foreign players are not willing to leave our country once they come here. I have a few worldwide favorite players who I think actually deserve what they earn such as Ronaldo, Messi and Pele.
