64 How happy we were when we first saw a television… Or when TRT 2 started broadcasting… Firsts are always welcomed with enthusiasm. This was what we felt when the rotary telephones first emerged thereby making magneto telephone sets history. This was a new step for the telephone which was the invention of the century for many people… Rotary phones had rapidly taken their place in the market… Just as rapidly, the term “dialing a number” found its place in the vocabulary of our beautiful Turkish language… Very few things around us change as rapidly and dramatically as tools of communication. We still need to think of the past even though it is quite difficult to understand it in this day and age when we are benefiting from all means of modern life. They provide us with knowledge as to where we were and where we have arrived… Letters were the only means of communication about 120 years ago and it took weeks to receive a reply. Whereas now, we can use cell phones to communicate with anyone we want wherever we are even if we are underwater. Moreover, we can now talk face to face by way of mobile communication technologies… This revolution actually started with a telegraph that could send coded signals and verbal communication was not possible until the invention of the telephone in 1876. The second important stage was the wireless phone invented in 1896 by Marconi. It would be fitting to continue with a word that has been identified with the telephone: ALO… ALO is a word that was use every day and telephones have taken their place in the most frequented corners of our homes as an indispensable tool of our daily lives. It stands for A-lessandra L-olita O-swaldo. This was the name of the lover of Alexander Graham Bell and over the years it became the first word whispered to a telephone. In a way, it was a priority for “love”. When Graham Bell invented the telephone he made the first direct line to the house of his lover. When the phone rang as he was working in his workshop, he knew that the caller could be none other than Allessandra Lolita Oswaldo; thus he would pick up the phone and say “Alessandra Televizyonla ilk tanıştığımızda nasıl sevinmiştik... Şimdi ise neredeyse her yerden hatta geçmiş zaman kipinde past tense ALO is a magical word… According to a rumor, it stands for A-lessandra L-olita O-swaldo. This was the name of a lover and over the years it became the first word whispered to a telephone. In a way, it was a priority for “love”. It transformed into an adventure with a story that binds people together while sharing stories, making people laugh or cry from time to time, bridging distances, inquiring after one’s health, kissing the hands of the elderly and the eyes of children… The first transmitted sound: ALO İletilen ilk ses: ALO Hazırlayan: Sezai Evans
