66 geçmiş zaman kipinde past tense Oxford Üniversitesi’ne konuk öğretmen olarak çağrıldı. İngiltere’de eline geçen Alman Hermann Von Helmholz adlı bilginin işitme fizyolojisine ilişkin kitabını okudu. Böylece müzik sesinin bir tel aracılığı ile aktarılabilineceği düşüncesi üzerinde yoğunlaştı. Bu sırada başka bilim adamları da bu konularda çalışmalar yürütüyordu. İlisha Gray bunlardan biriydi. İngiltere’den dönen Bell, Boston Üniversitesi İnsan Sesi Fizyolojisi dalı profesörlüğüne getirildi. Kuramsal bilgilerini teknik destekle yaşama geçirmeye ve işitme engelliler için duymalarını sağlayacak aletler yapmaya girişen Bell, Thomas Watson adlı bir elektrik mühendisi ile birlikte çalışmaya başladı. Bell ve Watson 1875 yılında sesin tel üzerinden bir başka yere gittiğini ortaya çıkarttı. Ancak ses anlaşılmaz bir durumdaydı. 14 Şubat 1876 günü Bell ve Gray telefon patenti almak için ayrı ayrı başvuru yaptılar. Bell’e 7 Mart günü istediği patent verildi. 174.465 nolu patentini alan Bell atölyede denemelerini sürdürürken telefonu çalıştırmak için kullandığı bataryadan pantolonuna asit döküldü. Watson’u yardıma çağırdı: “Bay Watson, çabuk buraya gelin. Sizi istiyorum” dedi. Bell yardımcısını yardıma çağırırken farkında olmadan 143 yıl önce 10 Mart günü ilk telefon görüşmesini yapmış oldu ve tarihe geçti. Watson Bell’in sesini “telefon”dan duydu. Bu buluşu ona birçok ödül kazandırdı. İlk el telefonunu geliştirmek için teknik sorunları alt etmeye çalışırken bir yandan da kendisini dava eden Gray’a karşı hukuk savaşı veriyordu. Telefon atölyeden ancak 4 yılda çıkabildi. 1880 yılında Bell’e yardım eden Tainer radyofon adını verdikleri aleti denedi. Bir okulun tepesine çıkan Tainer çok uzaktan görebildiği Bell’e telefonla seslendi: “Bay Bell, Bay Bell... Beni duyabiliyorsanız lütfen pencerenin önüne gelip şapkanızı sallayın.” Bell şapkasını salladığında, telefon artık doğumunun ardından emeklemeye başladı. His fame spread around like wildfire and Bell was invited to Oxford University as a visiting lecturer. In England, he read the book by the German Hermann Von Helmholz on the physiology of hearing. Thus, he focused on the idea that he might be able to transmit musical sounds by way of a cable. In the meantime, there were also other scientists who were working on the same issues. Ilisha Gray was one of these. After returning back from England, Bell was appointed as a Professor of Human Voice Physiology at Boston University. Bell combined his theoretical knowledge with technical support thereby developing tools that will enable individuals with hearing impairment to hear and he started working with an electrical engineer named Thomas Watson. Bell and Watson discovered in 1875 that sound can be moved via a cable. However, the transmitted sound was incomprehensible. On February14, 1876 Bell and Gray made separate applications to receive the patent for the telephone. Bell was given the patent he desired on March 7. After receiving the patent numbered 174.465, Bell spilled acid on his pants from the battery that he was using to operate the telephone. He called Watson for help: “Mr. Watson, come here. I want to see you,” he said. Bell had thus made the first phone call 143 years ago on March 10 as he called his assistant for help and so made history. Watson heard the sound of Bell from the “telephone”. This invention brought him many awards. As he was battling to overcome the technical issues to develop his first handheld telephone, he was also giving a legal battle against Gray who had filed a suit against him. The telephone could come out of the workshop only 4 years later. In 1880, Tainer who was assisting Bell tested the device they called radiophone. Tainer climbed on top of a school and shouted at Bell: “Mr Bell, Mr Bell… Stand in front of the window and wave your hat if you can hear me.” When Bell waved his hat, the telephone was already born and had started crawling.
