67 ilk telefon şebekesine sahip kent oldu. Telefon yakın yıllara dek Türkiye’de olduğu gibi santraller ve memurlar aracılığı ile yürütülürdü. Kısa sürede telefon direkleri ve kablo hatları, sokakları örümcek ağı gibi kapladı. Yürünmez bir hale gelen sokaklardaki bir telefon direği kabloları tutan 50 çapraz tahta taşırdı. Telefon günlük yaşama değişik biçimlerde girmeye başladı ve o yıllarda yayımlanan gazetelere verilen bir reklamda telefon şöyle tanıtıldı: “Sohbet, ağızdan kulağa telefonla konuşarak çok daha rahat...” Bell, 1915 yılında New York’u San Francisco’ya bağlayan ilk uzun kentler arası telefon hattını açtı. Karşısında yine yardımcısı Watson vardı. Aradan geçen onca yıla karşın Bell ilk günü unutmadı. Watson’a “Watson seni istiyorum, buraya gel” dedi. Telefonun olanaklarından yararlanarak müşteri çekmek isteyen oteller arasında kıyasıya bir savaş başladı. Oteller ünlü müzik, tiyatro, opera, konser salonlarına bağlanan telefon “Tiyatrofon” hattı ile aldıkları sesi lobilerinde oturan müşterilerine dinletmeye başladı. Bu durum giderek evlere ve iş yerlerine yayıldı. Graham Bell ise telefon kelimesi ile birlikte belleklere kazındı... 1893 yılında telefon ile ilgili gelişmeleri kaleme alan bir yazar gözlemini şöyle dile getirdi: “Şu anda duyabildiğimiz sanatçı ve şarkıcıları bir süre sonra insanlık görmeyi de başaracak...” Yazar haklıydı. Bu sözler “televizyon” özlemi olarak yorumlanmasına karşın gelişen teknoloji; görüntülü cep telefonlarını, internet üzerinden canlı yayınla iletişimi işaret ettiğini de gösteriyor bir bakıma. Soon, a vehement battle ensued between the hotels that wanted to attract customers by benefiting from the potential of telephones. The hotels started to have their guests in the lobbies listen to music, theater, opera and concert halls via the “Theaterphone” line. Over time, it spread out to all homes and workplaces. And Graham Bell left his mark with the word: telephone… An author in 1893 wrote the following words with regard to his observations related with the advancements in telephones: “Humanity will soon succeed in seeing the artists and singers that we are now able to hear…” The author was right. Even though these words were interpreted as the longing for “television”, it is also an indication of cell phones with live communication over the internet.
