Bodur bir yemiş ağacını silkeleyen bu ayı ne anlatır ve şehir için neden böyle bir sembol seçilmiş bilemem ama bildiğim bu heykele dokunan birinin Madrid’e tekrar geleceğine inanılıyor olması. Dokunun ki aklınız kalmasın... Heykelde değil, şehirde geçireceğiniz birkaç güne sığdıramayacaklarınızda... Meydanda Fransızlar tarafından yapılan tarihi bir postane var. Önündeki zemine monte edilen “sıfır noktası” levhası ve binanın üstüne sonradan eklenen saat kulesi de oldukça itibarlı Madrileño’ların gözünde. 1962 yılından itibaren her yılbaşı gecesinde bu kulede çalınan 12 tane çan sesi ile yeni yıla giriliyormuş. Yılbaşında bu meydanın nasıl kalabalık ve canlı olabileceğini hayal etmek hiç de zor değil. Bu arada bir İspanyol inanışına göre bu çan çaldığı süre boyunca 12 adet üzüm tanesini yemeyi başarırsanız, o yılın güzel geçeceğini ve dileklerinizin gerçekleşeceğini garantilemiş oluyorsunuz. Yılbaşı planlarını yapmaya şimdiden başlayacaklara duyurulur. Puerta del Sol’de sonlanan ve İstiklal’i andıran kalabalık caddelere doğru meyletmeye başlayabiliriz. Mayor meydanına giden Calle Mayor; alışveriş yapabileceğiniz işlek bir cadde olan Calle del Arenal; Desigual, H&M, Zara, Mango, Bershka gibi ünlü mağazaların olduğu Calle de Preciados; binaların üzerine atlıların tünediği ve Teatro Alcazar’a ulaşan Calle de Alcala sizi çağıracak. Telaşa gerek yok çünkü bu caddelerin hepsini ister istemez birkaç defa turlayacak, her ara sokakta yeni bir şey keşfedecek, cadde ve sokak tabelalarında resmedilen tarihi bell on this tower has struck 12 times at midnight on New Year’s day. There is a Churros store right behind the San Gines Church which has been active for a very long time with no other branches (Just like the İnci Patisserie on İstiklal, I hope their fates will not be the same).
