Daha önce “taş ve tuğladan
yapılmış olan” anlamına gelen
kâgir ya da kargir olarak
adlandırılan arasta yapı,
Kurtuluş Savaşı sırasında da
Yunanlılar’ın şehirden kaçarken
attığı bombalara maruz
kalarak, orta yerinden yara aldı.
1949 yılında Haşim İşcan’ın
Bursa Valisi olduğu dönemde
beton olarak ve asıl yerinden
60 cm daha yükseğe yeniden
inşa edildi. Köprüyü özgün
mimarisine tam anlamıyla
geri döndürebilmek elbette
mümkün olmadı ama daha
önce kullanılan malzemeye en
yakın malzemeler kullanılarak,
en azından varlığını korumak
için büyük çaba harcandı.
Köprü bugüne dek yalnızca
deprem, savaş gibi felaketler
sonucunda değil, iyi niyetlerle
de olsa yapılan beton ve asfalt
kaplamalar nedeniyle de yıkıcı
zararlar gördü. 1988 yılından
itibaren yapılan bireysel
ve kurumsal çalışmalarla
2002 yılında başlayan son
restorasyondan sonra köprü
2004 yılından itibaren bugünkü
haline kavuştu. Yaklaşık 10
metre genişliğindeki köprünün
iki tarafına karşılıklı ahşap
tasarımlı dükkânlar yapıldı.
Ortasındaki yaklaşık 3 metre
uzunluğundaki yolun üzerinde
6 metre yüksekliğinde bir tavan
bulunuyor.
Uzun süren çalışmalar,
görüşmeler ve tartışmalar
sonucunda; köprünün kâr
amacı gütmeyen, yalnızca
turistik ve tarihi yapısını
korumak amacı taşıyan,
bir sanat köprüsü haline
getirilmesine karar verildi.
Osmangazi Belediyesi,
TURSAB ve GÜMTOB’un da
dâhil olduğu çalışmalarla
hem yerli ve yabancı turistler
için ilgi çekici hem de köprü
adına işlevsel sonuçlar elde
edildi. Bugün üzerinde bulunan
ebru, çini, hat, minyatür,
ahşap oymacılığı, nakkaşlık
gibi Türk el sanatlarını
yaşatan dükkânlarıyla sahip
olduğu manevi değeri,
her türlü maddi değerin
çok üzerinde. Köprünün
“Irgandı Sanat Galerisi”
tabelasını görebileceğiniz
bir ucundan, diğer ucunda
bulunan Kayıhan Mahallesi
Muhtarlığı’na kadar atacağınız
her adım, sizi Bursa’nın
kültürel ve tarihi değerlerine
biraz daha yaklaştırıyor.
Köprüde sanat atölyeleri ve
türlü sanatların icra edildiği
samimi dükkânlar dışında
durup dinleneceğiniz ya da
oturup çayınızı yudumlarken
etrafı izleyebileceğiniz
birkaç kafe de bulunuyor. Bir
kültürün doğuşunu, gelişimini,
değerlerini tanıyıp sanki o
tarihlerde yaşamışsınız gibi
hissettiren son derece özel
bir yapı Irgandı Köprüsü.
Üzerinden geçenlerin
hayranlığını gizleyemediği ve
üzerinde emeği geçenlerin
yapının hak ettiği değeri tam
anlamıyla görebilmesi için
her zaman daha fazla neler
yapılabileceğini düşündüğü
kıymetli bir hatıra… Bir
akşamüstü Irgandı’da ya da
civarındaki Irgandı Köprüsü
manzaralı kafelerden birinde
oturup onu izlemek de ayrı bir
keyif; kendinizi, sizi şefkatle
kucaklayan kollarına bırakıp,
yaşanmışlıklarını düşünerek,
aydınlattığı tarihin yolunda
kaybolup gitmek de…
Her kentin kendine has
kültürel değerleri, farklı farklı
hikâyelere sahip binaları olur.
Ama Bursa’nın her köşesinde,
binasında, duvarında; tarihini
bilenin anlatmaya, merak
edenin dinlemeye doyamadığı
efsaneler gizlidir. Araştırdıkça
daha fazlasını bulmanın,
öğrenmenin, Bursalı olmakla
gurur duymanın sonu yoktur.
Bursa’nın en bilge, en hareketli
ve en renkli köprüsü yalnızca
yolları birbirine bağlamıyor;
aynı zamanda ziyaretçilerini
Bursa’nın gizemli tarihine mistik
bir yolculuğa çıkarıyor…

treasure has been unearthed
where the sword was “swung at”.
The soldier ran to Orhan Gazi
to tell what has happened and
he has ordered the soldier to do
charity work in Bursa. The soldier
has donated one tenth of the
treasure to the government and
has ordered a bridge to be built
on where the treasure was found
naming it Irgandi meaning “one
that is swung”. Irgandi Bridge
connects Osmangazi and Yıldırım
districts while also connecting
the locals of Bursa with their
mysterious past thanks to this
tale that is still being told today.
No matter what the reasons for
building the bridge are, it has
immense cultural, historical and
architectural importance for the
city of Bursa.
Irgandı Bridge has experienced
many misfortunes throughout the
centuries. First it was damaged
severely during the 1855
earthquake which was one of the
most important disasters that
Bursa has ever faced. According
to historical records that have
reached our day, there were
31 shops, 2 warehouses and
1 prayer house on the bridge.
Its current state following the
restoration is the closest that
it has ever come to its original
appearance. The Ottoman kagir
bazaar meaning that “it has been
built of stones and bricks” was hit
by bombs that the Greeks threw
while escaping from the city
during the War of Independence.
It was rebuilt using concrete in
1949 when Haşim İşcan was
the governor of Bursa 60 cm
higher than its original location.
Of course it was not possible to
return the bridge to its authentic
architecture, however material
that were closest to the originals
were used and great efforts were
put in to at least ensure that it
stays intact. The bridge was
damaged not only by disasters
such as earthquakes or wars
but during concrete and asphalt
laying work which had good
intentions as well. Following the
individual and corporate work
since 1988, restoration started
in 2002 and the bridge reached
its current appearance in 2004.
Wooden stores were built on two
sides of the bridge that is about
10 meters wide. It has a 6 meter
high ceiling over the almost 3
meter long road in the middle.
It was decided at the end of long
work, discussions and meetings
that the bridge should be turned
into a non-profit art bridge that
aims only to preserve its touristic
and historical structure. The
work carried out by Osmangazi
Municipality, TURSAB and
GÜMTOB gave results that were
satisfactory for all tourists in
terms of the functionality of the
bridge. Today, the spiritual value
of the shops on the bridge that
continue the Turkish handcrafts
traditions such as mottling,
miniature, wood carving, painting
is above all kinds of financial
gain. Each step that you will
take from one end of the bridge
where you will see the “Irgandı
Art Gallery” sign to the other end
where the Kayıhan Neighborhood
Mukhtar Office is located will
bring you closer to the cultural
and historical values of Bursa.
In addition to art workshops and
shops where all kinds of crafts
are made, there are also several
coffee houses where you can
rest and sip your coffee or tea
while enjoying the surrounding.
Irgandi Bridge is one of the very
few special structures that make
you feel the birth of a culture, its
development while also making
you feel as if you have actually
lived in those times. It is a
valuable memory that passersby
admire in awe and those who
strive to make it live continue
thinking about ways to ensure
that it receives the attention it
deserves… It is a special kind of
enjoyment to sit in the evenings
at a coffee house overlooking
the Irgandi Bridge and watch it
embrace you with all its past and
history…
Every city has different buildings
with different cultural values and
tales. But the city of Bursa hides
many legends in every nook and
cranny that those who are curious
cannot get enough of. One can
always take pride in being a local
of Bursa as one does research
and finds out more about the
past. The wisest, the most active
and the most colorful bridge of
Bursa not only connects two
roads together but also takes the
visitors of Bursa on a mystical trip
to the past.
