Hem kendini geliştirecek hem
de öğrendiklerinin üzerine bir
şeyler ekleyerek yaratıcılığını
daha da tetikleyecek
etkenler aramaya başladı. Bu
sıkıntılarını paylaşmak için
aradığı yakın arkadaşının da
katkısıyla o dönem çalıştığı
işinden istifa etti ve ne
yapacağına karar vermek için
evine kapandı. Bu süre içinde
bir rota belirleyip, gerekli
kişilerle iletişime geçti; blog
hazırlayıp, yalnızca tasarım
yeteneğini kullanarak hayatta
kalabileceği bir dünya turu
planladı. Binlerce mail attı,
ona yardımcı olabilecek bir
sürü kişiyle irtibata geçti.
Nihayet 11 Temmuz 2011
tarihinde cebindeki ancak
yola yetecek miktarda para ve
en gerekeceğini düşündüğü
birkaç ufak tefek eşyasını
koyduğu sırt çantası ile yola
çıktı. İlk seferde altı ay boyunca
dolaştığı Mumbai, Pune, Goa,
Chiang Mai, Ho Chi Minh,
Seoul şehirlerinde farklı reklâm
şirketlerinde çalıştı. Altı ayın
sonunda bazı sağlık sorunları
yüzünden küçük bir ara vererek
ülkesine dönmek zorunda
kaldı. Ama Çağrı Çankaya için
yol henüz başlamıştı ve devam
etmeliydi. 2012 yılının Mart
ayında yeniden yollara düştü.
Ona göre ilk rotayı belirlemek,
bu işin en zor kısmıydı. İkinci
rotayı belirlemek bu yüzden
artık çok daha kolaydı.
“Yol, kendine bir yer
bulamamış kişinin
özlemidir. Kendi yerini
yerleşiklikte bulamayan
kişi onu yolculukta arar.
Özellikle çok büyük
yolculuklar, büyük
buhranlar sonucu
çıkmıştır hep.”
Yollardaki tasarımcı Çağrı
Çankaya, çıktığı yolda birçok
dost edindi; onu yolunda
umutlandıracak kadar iyi
niyetli destekler de gördü
ama yola çıkmadan önce
aldığı kararlar için yakınları
arasında onun “aklından zoru
olduğunu” düşünenler bile
oldu. Çünkü ortalama bir
hayatın standartlarının dışında
bir yaşam için kolları sıvamış
olmak, başkaları için hem
hayranlık uyandırıcı hem de
korkutucuydu. Hayatın yollarda
geçmesinin yanı sıra bir
yandan para kazanabilmek için
yaptığı işler farklı ülkeler, farklı
şehirlerdeydi ve mesleğinin
ayrıntıları her kültür için farklılık
gösteriyordu. Bunlara uyum
sağlamak, insanlarla sıcak
ilişkiler kurabilmek ve her şeye
rağmen hayatta kalabilmek
kolay değildi. Onu işe çağıran
bir ülkeye gittiğinde arayıp
ulaşamadığı şirketler de oldu,
ayakkabıları çalındığında eve
yalınayak yürüyerek gitmek
zorunda kaldığı günler de…
Bir gün havaalanında mahsur
kaldı; bir gün gıda zehirlenmesi
yüzünden mide kanaması
geçirerek neredeyse canından
oluyordu. Yine de hiçbir zaman
vazgeçmedi ve yolundan geri
dönmedi. Çünkü o en başından
çıktığı yolda bir şekilde hayatta
kalmayı hedeflemişti ve hala
hayattaydı. Ona göre o risk
almıyordu çünkü onun için asıl
risk, monoton bir hayatı kabul
etmekti. Tasarımla dünyayı
gezme fikri ve bunu hayata
geçirebilmiş olması güzeldi
ama Çağrı Çankaya için yeterli
değildi. Bu fikri başka fikirlerle
desteklemeliydi. Belki birlikte
çalıştığı şirketlerle birlikte bir
sosyal sorumluluk projesine
imza atabilir ve böylece
ilham vermenin ve onları
cesaretlendirmenin yanı sıra
insanlara başka şekillerde de
faydalı olabilirdi. Çankaya bu
yola çıkmadan önce hem özel
hayatını hem de mesleğini
sorgulayarak kendini ve
tasarımlarını geliştirebilmek için
en iyi yöntemin bu olduğuna
karar verdi. Onun için dünyanın
en iyi eğitimi yaşarak alınan
eğitimdi ve daha iyisi olamazdı.

route for himself and contacted
the relevant people; prepared
a blog and planned a world trip
during which he could earn his
living using his talents for design.
He sent thousands of e-mails,
contacted many people who
could help. Finally, in July 11,
2011 he got his bag with a few
things he thought he might need
along with money only enough for
the road and went out. During the
first six months of the first trip he
worked at various advertisement
agencies at Mumbai, Pune,
Goa, Chiang Mai, Ho Chi Minh,
and Seoul. At the end of the six
months he had to quit for a while
due to various health problems
and return to his country.
However, the road had only just
started for Çağrı Çankaya and he
had to go on. In March 2012 he
hit the roads again. According to
him, deciding on the first route
was the hardest part. That is why
planning the second route was
much easier.
“One longs for the road if
he/she has not been able
to find a place for one’s
self. Those who cannot
find themselves when they
settle down start seeking
on the road. Especially long
trips are almost always the
result of big crises.”
The designer on the road Çağrı
Çankaya met many new friends
on his travels; he also received
support that gave him hope but
there were people even among
his relatives who thought that he
was “out of his mind”. Because
setting out to live a life that falls
out of the normal standards of an
average life was both inspiring
and frightening for others. In
addition to living on the road, the
things he did to earn his living
varied from country to country
and city to city due to different
cultures. It was not easy to
adapt to all this, establish warm
relationships with others and stay
alive despite everything. There
were companies that he could
not reach when called in for work
as well as days when he had to
walk home bare footed when his
shoes were stolen… One day he
got stuck in an airport; one day
he almost passed away due to
gastric bleeding as a result of
food poisoning. Despite all these
he never gave up. Because his
goal was to stay alive on this road
and he was still alive. He did not
think that he was taking any risks,
because for him the real risk was
accepting a monotonous life. It
was nice that he had been able to
accomplish his original thought
of travelling around the world and
designing at the same time; but
this was not enough for Çağrı
Çankaya. He had to support this
with other thoughts. Maybe he
could start a social responsibility
project with the companies he
was working for and thus could
be beneficial to others in addition
to inspiring and encouraging
them. Çankaya decided that
this would be the best method
for improving both himself and
his designs by questioning his
career and occupation before
going on this road. For him the
best education in the world was
one where things were learned
by doing. In his own words, he
started renewing himself by
throwing aside all the things he
lacked and all his unhappiness
when he hit the bottom. He
realized that what he had seen
experienced and learned during
the 3 years on the road were
above everything else. The fact
that the job he enjoyed doing
required originality and freedom
depended on his feeling free. It
was this factor that enabled him
to follow the decisions he made.
He lived for doing the best that
he could in his job as “DOTR”
that is Designer On The Road
and to travel, be happy and he
succeeded in doing so. His plan
for the future is to continue doing
the same thing. Among his plans
for the future are exhibitions to
displaying what he saw during
his travels and publishing a
book. Even though he does not
enjoy uncertainties, he knows
that his whole life is built around
uncertainties and that many
surprises await him at every
turn. And the best part is that
he accepts everything as they
come either good or bad. Even
though he travelled to dozens
of countries and stayed long
enough to understand and learn
their culture in each one, he plans
to continue until there is nowhere
else that he has not seen on the
world. Even though this year he
seems to have somewhat settled
when he started giving lessons
at a university, he seems to
