Bahar; doğanın rönesansı,
uykusundan uyanışı,
canlanışı. Aynı zamanda,
insan hayatında doğum,
ilkgençlik ve gençlik çağını
simgeliyor. Her yıl tekrarlanan
bu döngü, mitolojide Demeter
ve Persophone’nin hikâyesinde
sembolize edilmiş.
Kronos’un (zaman) kızı olan
Demeter, işlenmiş toprağın,
ekilmiş tarlaların tanrısıdır.
İnsanları besleyen toprağı,
onun verdiği meyveleri,
ürünleri ve özellikle başak
ve buğdayı temsil eder.
Astrolojideki “Başak” karakteri
gibi, kimseleri beğenmeyen
Demeter, bir boğa şekline
giren Zeus’tan kaçamadı ve
Kore adında bir kız dünyaya
geldi. Genç ve güzel bir kız
olan Kore, bir gün kırlarda
çiçek toplarken Cehennemler
Tanrısı tarafından yeraltına,
ölüler ülkesine kaçırıldı.
Kaçırılırken büyük bir çığlık
atan Kore, yeraltı dünyasının
tanrısı Hades’in karısı olacaktı.
Zeus’un kardeşi olan Hades
Kore’ye yeni bir isim verdi. Kore
artık Persephone olmuştu.
Çığlığı duyan Demeter, kızını
bütün yeryüzünde beyhude
aradı. Artık umutları tükenmişti.
Son çare olarak Demeter,
her şeyi gören, gözünden
hiçbir şey kaçmayan Güneş’in
sorularına cevap vereceğini
düşünüp ona yalvardı. Güneş
ise ona “Ne yazık ki senin
felaketine Hades sebep
olmuştur. Çünkü O, senin kızını
beğendi ve kaçırdı. Baş-tanrı
Zeus da, onun kardeşi olan
cehennemler tanrısının karısı
olmasına müsaade etti. Artık
senin güzel kızının yüzünü
hiçbirimiz göremeyeceğiz.
Kızın cehennemler kraliçesi
olacaktır. İşte baş tanrının
takdiri budur’’ dedi. Bu haberle
kendini sonsuz kedere kaptıran
Demeter, artık görevlerini
yerine getiremiyordu.
Buğday tarlalarını yetiştiren,
meyveleri olgunlaştıran
Demeter’di. Kendi gönlüne
kapanan, kızından başka bir
şey düşünemeyen, Zeus’a
öfkelenen Demeter, vazifelerini
yapmadığı için tarlalar
mahsul vermiyor, karıncalar
gölgesinde barınacak ot
parçası bulamıyordu. Ağaçlar
kışa girmiş gibi somurtuyor,
yapraklarını döküyordu.
Ateş saçan güneş, toprağın
rutubetini uçuruyor, dünyayı
çöle çeviriyordu. Çeşmeler
kurumuş, kuyular çekilmiş,
kaynaklar soğulmuştu. Müthiş
bir kıtlık hüküm sürmeye
başlamıştı.
Başta Zeus olmak üzere,
dünyanın bu halinden
müteessir olan tanrılar,
Demeter’i sevindirmeye
karar verdiler. Tanrıların
habercisi Hermes’i Hades’in
yanına gönderdiler, insanlara
acımasını ve Persephone’yi
yeryüzüne çıkararak Demeter’i
sevindirmesini, kızına
kavuşmasını istediler. Ölüler
diyarının kudretli hükümdarı
kara kaşlı, kara saçlı Hades,
karısının dünya üzerinde çok
kalmadan kendisine iade
edilmesi şartı ile bu isteği
kabul etti. Şartı unutur da
geri dönmez endişesi ile
Persephone’ye yeraltında
yetişen nardan 4 tane
yedirdi. Yeraltında yetişen
meyvelerden yiyenler oradan
tamamıyla ayrılamadıkları için
karısı ölüler diyarına dönmek
zorundaydı. Yılın dokuz ayını
yeryüzünde geçirirken, kalan
üç ayını kocasının yanında
yeraltında geçirecekti.
Kızına kavuşan Demeter’in
solgunluğu, bitkinliği gitti,
kanlandı. Her yer çiçeklerle
süslendi, meyveler dallardan
sarktı, tarlalar mahsulden
dolup taştı. Persephone’nin
yeryüzüne, toprağın altından
çıkan çiçekler, bitkiler gibi
çıkıp gelmesiyle ilkbahar
oldu. Vaktini doldurup tekrar
kocasının yanına, toprağın
derinliklerine, yeraltı dünyasına
dönmesiyle de kış olacaktı. Bu
sonsuza kadar tekrarlanacaktı.
Spring; renaissance of nature when
it wakes up and livens up. It also
represents the birth and youth of people.
This cycle that repeats every year has
been symbolized in mythology with
the story of Demeter and Persephone.
Kronos’ (time) daughter Demeter is
the goddess of cultivated land, of tilled
soil. She represents the soil that feeds
people, the fruits that it gives along with
the products, especially ear of corn and
wheat. Just like the “Virgo” character
in astrology, Demeter liked no one but
could not get away from Zeus who had
taken on the shape of a bull and thus
gave birth to a baby girl named Kore.
Kore was a young and beautiful girl
when she was kidnapped by the God
of the Underwold, the land of the dead.
Kore gave out a shrill cry while being
kidnapped and she was to become
the wife of Hades. Zeus’ brother Hades
gave Kore a new name. Kore was now
Persephone. Demeter heard her cry
and looked for her in vain. She had lost
all hope. Her final hope was in the Sun
and she thought that maybe the Sun
could answer her questions because it
saw everything and missed nothing. But
the Sun said, “Unfortunately it is Hades
that caused your downfall. Because
he liked your daughter and kidnapped
her. Chief God Zeus gave permission
to her becoming the wife of the god of
hell. From now on none of us will see
the beautiful face of your daughter. Your
daughter will be the queen of hell. That
is what our chief god wants.” Demeter
was grieved to hear this and could
accomplish her tasks no more. It was
Demeter who cultivated the wheat fields
and who ripened the fruits. Demeter
locked herself in her own heart and got
mad at Zeus. She could think of nothing
else but her own daughter thereby
fields yielded no crops and even the
ants could find no piece of grass to
hide under. The trees were gone and
they were all shedding leaves. Fiery sun
evaporated the moisture out of the soil
and turned the world into a giant desert.
Fountains, wells and springs had gone
dry. An immense famine started.
Zeus and the gods who were regretful of
these events decided to please Demeter.
They sent Hermes, the messenger of the
Gods to Hades and asked him to have
mercy on people, to please Demeter
by letting Persephone back on earth
so that she could rejoin her daughter.
The mighty ruler of the land of the dead,
black haired and black browed Hades
accepted this offer with the condition
that his wife should not stay for long
on the world and be returned to him
shortly after. He had Persephone eat 4
of the pomegranates cultivated in the
underworld for fear that she would forget
the condition and not get back. Since
those who ate fruits of the underworld
could not leave there completely, her
wife would have to return back to the
land of the dead. She lived for nine
months on the land after which she
passed the remaining 3 months in the
underworld with her husband. Demeter
freshened up and became livelier when
she rejoined her daughter. Everywhere
was decorated with flowers, fruits
abounded on branches and there were
crops everywhere. Spring came when
Persephone came back up from the
underworld like flowers and plants that
rise out of the soil. Winter would come
when the time came for her to get back
to her husband in the underworld. This
would be repeated forever.
