ile 1988 yılında hayallerine
kavuştu ve “Volvox” isimli,
tüm üyeleri kızlardan oluşan
müzik grubunu kurdu. Grup
1994 yılında, albüm çıkarma
aşamasına gelmiş olmalarına
rağmen gruptaki kopmalar
nedeniyle dağılana kadar
birçok mekanda sahne aldı.
Kısa zamanda sevilen bir grup
olmayı başaran, konserler
veren ve kalabalık kitlelere
şarkılar söyleyen kızlar
grubunun üyeleri arasında,
Bursalı dünyaca ünlü modacı
Arzu Kaprol ve rock müziğin
diğer asi sesi Özlem Tekin de
yer alıyordu.
Müziği Şebnem Ferah’ın
okuldan uzaklaşmasına
sebep olmuştu ve okuduğu
ekonomi bölümünden
ayrılmıştı ama sonraki yıllarda
İstanbul’a geldiğinde İstanbul
Üniversitesi İngiliz Dili ve
Edebiyatı bölümüne kaydını
yaptırdı. Bir yandan da solo
olarak müzik çalışmalarına
devam ediyordu. Sezen Aksu
ve Onno Tunç tarafından
cevheri keşfedilen Şebnem
Ferah, 1996 yılında müziğe
olan tutkusunu, bu alandaki
yeteneklerini ve Aksu ile
Tunç’un da desteklerini alarak
ilk albümü “Kadın”ı çıkardı.
Özellikle o yılları yaşamış olan
herkesin muhtemelen sahneleri
hala gözünün önünden
gitmeyen bir klip çekti. Çıkış
ve klip şarkısı “vazgeçtim
dünyadan” diyordu ama o
kendi dünyasına en önemli
adımı atmıştı. Rock müzik
Şebnem Ferah ile yeniden
şekilleniyordu. Hem albüm
satışları hem klipleri ile sürekli
liste başı oldu. Yıllarca büyük
bir aşkla bağlandığı müzik artık
onun aşkına karşılık veriyordu.
1997 yılında İzmir’de verdiği
konserde, o gün seslendiği
yaklaşık 6000 kişi konser
çıkışında onun şarkılarını
mırıldanıyordu. Acıları,
sevinçleri, heyecanlarıyla
yeteneğini besledi; hayatın
içinden cümlelerle zamana
meydan okudu Şebnem

Music had caused Şebnem Ferah
to move away from school and
she had left the department of
economics where she was a
student at, but she enrolled at
the Istanbul University English
Literature department when she
returned to Istanbul. She was
simultaneously carrying out a
solo career. The talent of Şebnem
Ferah was first realized by Sezen
Aksu and Onno Tunç and she
released her first album in 1996
“Kadın” by combining her talent
and passion for music with the
support of Aksu and Tunç. She
made a video clip the images of
which are most likely remembered
by all who lived in those times.
The first music clip screamed,
“I gave up on the world” but she
had taken the most important
step in her world. Rock music
was being reshaped by Şebnem
Ferah. She ranked top in all the
lists with album sales and music
clips. Music was now responding
to her forlorn love of many years.
The almost 6000 people in the
crowd at the 1997 concert in Izmir
were all murmuring her songs
at the exit. The pains, joys and
excitements all fed her talent
and Şebnem Ferah sometimes
challenged time with words from
life itself. There were those who
regarded her as “queen of ice”
whereas there were others who
thought of her as “the lady of
fire”. She was first and foremost
a human being. It was maybe
her method of expressing herself
to others that set her apart. She
touched us deeply while singing
at the top of her voice, she made
us realize in the most tolerable
manner that everything was for
people. So much so that people
found hope when listening to her
and could challenge loneliness
with the strength that her voice
gave them. She preferred to
share her pains instead of being
crushed under them. And as she
shared, she never let her life to
drag her along undesired paths.
She gave a break of 3 years when
she lost her sister in 1998 and
started “writing short sentences”
from 1999 onwards. Şebnem
Ferah was always someone who
drew attention when she was
not around and who was talked
a lot when she released a new
album and new songs even
though she made no extra effort
