İspanyol Mahallesi
Şehrin kaosuna, daracık
sokaklara ve hafiften
tekin olmayan hallerine
doyamayanlar için sıradaki
durağımız kalenin yamacından
sahile doğru olan bölgede Via
Toldeo’nun hemen arkasında
yer alan Quartieri Spagnoli
yani İspanyol Mahallesi.
Tarlabaşı’nı Napoli’ye
taşımışlar sanki. Bakkallar,
manavlar, kahvehaneler ve
tabi yine asılı çamaşırlar, köşe
başlarında aslında tüm şehirde
olduğu gibi, “edicola” adını
verdikleri adak amaçlı, gelen
geçenin dua ettiği küçük camlı
dolaplar içinde dini figürler
ve fotoğraflar olan süslü ve
ışıklı dua alanları, yüksek
sesle konuşarak anlaşan ve
mutlaka sigara içen Napolililer
ile bu defa yokuşlarda
gürültüyle gaz yakan
scooter’lar… Sokaklarında
kaybolduğunuzda karşınıza,
mesela bir işkembeci
çıkabilir. Avrupa’nın orta
yerinde de işkembe kelle-
paça mümkünmüş demek
ki dersiniz. Şaşkınlığınızı
atmadan siyah çizgili takım
elbise içinde, gözünde güneş
gözlüğü, belinde kendini belli
eden pistol ve kulağında gül ile
dolaşan biri köşeyi dönebilir.
Ya da “Oo mama mia!” diyen
alkolik bir abi. Üstelik bir film
setinde de değilsinizdir. Dedik
ya biraz Tarlabaşı tedirginliği
var, e ona da biz alışığız çok
şükür.
Via Toledo
“Bu kadar heyecan bana
yeter” diyenler biraz daha
nezih bölgelere, örneğin sahile
doğru yola koyulabilirler.
Piazza Plebiscito’nun hemen
yanı başından başlayan ve
özellikle akşam saatlerinde
neredeyse miting meydanı
kadar kalabalıklaşan cıvıl cıvıl
bir bölge, Via G.Sezza, Via
Chiaia, Via Nardonnes’i de
içine alıp, Via Toledo boyunca
eski şehre doğru uzanıyor.
Milano’daki Galleria Vittorio
Emanuele II‘nin bir benzeri
olan ve yapımı 1890’da
tamamlanan önemli alışveriş
merkezi Galleria Umberto
da aynı bölgede yer alıyor.
Dört yönden girişi bulunan
Galleria’nın bir girişi San Carlo
Operası karşısındayken, bir
diğer kolu da Via Toledo’ya
bakıyor. Biraz sterilite iyidir
diyenler önden buyursun.
Sahil şeridine inildiğinde ise
Napoli’nin en önemli ikonik
yapıları olan Castel Nuovo
(Yeni Burç) ve biraz arkasında

Spending time in Pompeii is an
interesting experience.
Sorrento
Next, after Pompeii is the
20-minute away seaside town
of Soreto, the beginning of the
Amalfi coast. There are two
reasons to visit this cute town
by the sea, founded on rocky
slopes. First, the closest ferry
to the Island of Capri leaves
from here. Second, starting with
limoncello, a world built upon
lemons waits for you. You can
get here in an hour with a scruffy
regional train from Naples. One-
way trip costs 4,1€. A couple of
hours might be enough to see
the town if you are quick on your
feet. Contrary to Naples, Sorrento
is very clean, and the squares
are more organized. There are a
couple of viewing decks on the
hills. Here you can see the sea,
the coast of Naples, and if it is
a clear day the Vesuvius. You
would not want to miss it. Our
souvenir list in Sorrento contains
lemon cookies, lemon candies,
lemon colognes, chocolates
with lemon liqueur, lemon soaps
in the shape of lemons, and
of course Limoncello. One of
the streets at the entrance has
first class stores that specialize
on lemons and lemon flavored
products. My personal favorite
here is “crema di limoncello”. Ask
for the freshly made ones and
remember me with love as you
taste it. There is nothing like it.
The Island of Capri
With the zest of lemon in
our mouths, our next stop is
Capri. Sorrento and Capri are
closely located. Following a
20-25-minute ferry ride, you will
get to Italy’s popular vacation
spot; the Island of Capri. After
your days of slumming it in
Naples, I would advise you
to freshen up. For you will be
breathing the same air as the
jet-set of Europe. The island
houses all the couture brands
and high-end boutiques of Italian
and French designers. Hence the
style contest. Everybody, young
or old, glide as on a catwalk.
Each person is beautiful or
handsome. There is a funicular
which will take you up to the Main
Capri, and allow you to go to the
other side of the island. There are
also minibuses. White houses
with flowers flowing from their
windows, the Mediterranean,
flying seagulls, the smell of
tangerines, the distant sound of
accordion playing, coffee in your
hand, maybe a slice of tiramisu...
The adrenalin in Naples will be
replaced by endorphins. Well
there are also places to see here.
Villa Jovis, built for Emperor
Tiberius and Villa San Michele in
Main Capri are enchanting. The
Blue Cave (Grotta Azzurra) is
another site to be seen however
you can only reach it with small
boats by the help of local tour
companies. Naples and Capri
have corresponding ferries too. I
know we made a detour but you
could not miss tasting “crema di
