Dünyanın Paris ve Bangkok
ile birlikte en çok ziyaret
edilen ve 300'den fazla dilin
konuşulduğu etnik yapısıyla
belki de en kozmopolit şehrine
gidiyoruz. Size bir sorum var:
“Gezegenimiz tek bir ülke
olsaydı başkenti neresi olurdu?”
Napolyon'un cevabı İstanbul
olmuş. Ama siz romantizmi bir
kenara bırakıp şöyle etraflıca bir
düşünün bakalım. Kriterleriniz
tarih, sanat, spor, ekonomi,
endüstri, şehircilik, çevre
politikaları, demokrasi, insan
hakları, bilim ya da diyelim
ki eğlence sektörü ya da
turizm olsun. Benim adayım
Londra. Dünya çapında önemli
ağırlığı ve gücüyle büyük bir
medeniyetin, Birleşik Krallık’ın
başkenti olan Londra'yı
dünyanın başkenti olmaya
aday saymam abartı olmamalı.
Teşbihte hata olmazmış. Evet
hazırlanın, dünyanın başkentine
gidiyoruz bu sayıda. Londra
gerçekten çözebilmek, her
şeyini bilmek, iç dünyasına
ve kuytularına inebilmek için
kendinizi adamanız gereken
şehirlerden. Tıpkı İstanbul,
New York, Tokyo, Los Angeles
ya da Paris gibi. Kana kana
yaşayıp tüketemeyeceğiniz,
sindiremeyeceğiniz türden...
Londra'da bir turist için
“yapılması gerekenler listesi”
o kadar kalabalık ki -ne kadar
başarılı olurum bilemiyorum
ama- bu sayıda her şeyden
bahsetme telaşımı bir köşeye
bırakacağım sevgili okur...
İlk defa ziyaret edecekler en
azından dört-beş gün ayırmalı
bu dünya kentine. Şanslı olanlar
belki bir on beş gün ayırarak
Londra'nın altını üstüne getirip
araya Oxford, Bath, Brighton
gibi çevredeki görece küçük
ama ilgi çekici şehirleri de
katabilirler seyahat planlarına...
Besides Paris and Bangkok, we
are going to one of the most
visited and may be the most
cosmopolitan city of the world
with its ethnic form and more
than 300 spoken languages.
Here is the question: “If our
planet was a single country where
would its capital be?” Napoleon’s
answer was Istanbul. But as
a Turk please think twice and
leave romantism aside. Let your
criteria be history, art, sports,
economy, industrialism, urban
planning, environmental policies,
democracy, human rights,
science, or even entertaintment
or tourism. My vote would be
London. It should not be too
exaggerated to consider London,
the capital city of the UK, which is
a great civilization with its global
significance and power, as a
candidate for the world’s capital.
Let it not be misunderstood.
Yes, get ready, we are off to
the world’s capital in this issue.
London is one of those places
where you should put your heart
to unravel it, to learn all about it
and to travel to its hidden sides
and inner spirits. Just like Istanbul,
New York, Los Angeles or Paris. A
place which you can’t get enough
of… For a tourist in London the
“to-do list” is so long- I am not
sure how successful I could
be- so my dear readers, I will set
aside being panic-striken and
write about everything… Visiting
fort he first time, you should spare
at least four or five days for this
“world city”. The fortunate ones
may spare a 15-day period to
root around London and add
small and attractive cities in the
surrounding like Oxford, Bath and
Brighton to their travel plans…
You can begin by reserving your
hotel and plane ticket a couple
of months in advance. After all,
we are talking about quite an
expensive city. There is no need
to push your budget hard. Those
reservations are preliminary to the
preparation for the challenging
visa application for the UK. One
of the essential things to consider
is the airport you are landing to.
