Amerikan Sinema Bilimleri
ve Sanat Akademisi’nin her
yıl dağıttığı “Akademi” ya da
daha yaygın olarak kullanılan
adıyla “Oscar” ödülleri... 1939
yılında resmiyet kazanan
“Oscar” isminin kaynağı ise
yalnızca rivayetlerden ibaret.
Bu yıl 86. kez sahipleriyle
buluşan ödüller, ilk yıllarından
bugüne dek saygınlığından
ve değerinden hiçbir şey
kaybetmediği gibi kendini
sürekli yenileyip, güncele
ayak uydurarak bugünkü
popüler kültürde bile yerini
aldı. Artık bir tür resmi geçit
anlamı kazanmış olan kırmızı
halı geçişleri, özel günlerde,
sevdiklerimize verdiğimiz
hediyelere dönüşen Oscar
heykelciği, ödül töreninin
belki de en heyecanlı anını
simgeleyen “and the Oscar
goes to…” sözlerinin dilimize
dolanmış olması bile bu
durumun kanıtı gibi…
Her yıl tüm dünyanın büyük
bir merakla sonuçlarını
beklediği, sinema sektörüne
emek verenlerin bütün bir
yıl yaptığı çalışmalarının
karşılığını almayı umduğu
Oscar ödülleri, dünyanın
bilinen en eski sinema ödülü
olma özelliğine sahip. Kuruluş
amacı, sinema sanatının
gelişimine katkıda bulunmak
olan Sinema Sanatları ve
Bilimleri Akademisi, ilk kez
1927 yılında, 36 kişilik bir
grupla başlayan çalışmalarla
bu organizasyonun temellerini
atmıştı. Orijinal ismi “Academy
Award of Merit” olan ödüllerin
simgesi altın heykelcik, Metro
Goldeyn Mayer’in sanat
yönetmeni Cedric Gibbons
tarafından tasarlandı. Onu
son haline getiren kişi ise
George Stanley oldu. “Altın
ödül”, “üstün başarı heykeli”,
“altın adam”, “demir adam”
ve benzeri isimlerle anılan
heykelciğin neden Oscar
adını aldığı aslında tam olarak
bilinmiyor. Bu konuda anlatılan
hikâyelerden birine göre
Akademi’nin kütüphanesinde
görevli Margaret Herrick’in bu
heykelciği gördüğünde onu
Sinemanın “en”lerini belirleyen Oscar ödüllerinin 1929 yılında Los Angeles’te başlayan macerası, bugün aynı
ilgi ve heyecanla devam ediyor. Sahibine büyük bir değer katan, emeklerinin ve başarılarının altın karşılığı olan

interest and excitement. It is the oldest tradition in cinema with the Oscar statuette adding a great value to its owner
as a golden response to his/her efforts and successes, with its red carpet and the award ceremony that leaves

the “Oscars”… Rumors abound
regarding the source of the name
“Oscar” which has become
official in 1939. The awards that
were given this year for the 86th
time have not lost anything of
their value and respectability and
even have renewed themselves
continuously to take their place
in the popular culture of our time.
The red carpet walks that have
transformed into a kind of official
parade, the Oscar statuette we
have given as gifts to our loved
ones on special occasions along
with the popular expression “and
the Oscar goes to…” signifying
the most exciting moments
during the ceremonies are proofs
of this…
The announcement of the Oscar
award winners are eagerly
expected every year and it
is the oldest cinema award
with which those who work in
the cinema industry hope to
get the return of their efforts.
The Motion Picture Arts and
Sciences which was founded to
contribute to the development
of the art of cinema started
working on this organization in
1927 with a group of 36 people
laying the foundations for this
organization. The original title
of the awards was “Academy
Award of Merit” and the golden
statuette symbolizing the award
was designed by Cedric Gibbons
who was the art director of
Metro Goldwyn Mayer. It was
George Stanley who made the
final touches. It is actually not
known why the statuette known
as the “Golden Award”, “statue
of superior merit”, “golden man”,
“iron man” and various similar
names is also called Oscar.
According to a tale told about
this issue, the statuette has been
named Oscar after Margaret
Herrick resembled it to his uncle
also named Oscar. Another
source states that the reason why
the statuette is called Oscar is
because Bette Davis mentioned
the name of her first husband,
Oscar Nelson, when receiving
the prize. And yet according to
another rumor, the name Oscar
goes back to the time when
Hollywood author Sidney Skolsky
used the term “Uncle Oscar” in
his article on Katharine Hepburn
who was known in 1934 Oscar
