year old tradition that unites
people around the universality
of music continues to exist.
Whoever is in the house of
Gezek, they are one and the
same, all hearts are joined as
are the breaths… Conversations
do not drift off towards topics
that will spoil the joy. No one
talks about soccer, politics, daily
hustle and bustle or issues that
will lead to a conflict between
opposing ideas. Because just
like in the old days that we miss,
people are together who know
that they are children if they are
indeed children and who know
their wisdom if they are elderly.
What really matters during
gezeks is love, respect, decency,
brotherhood, friendship,
reverence, conversation
and of course music.
Each gezek is actually a
travel through time. One
hears what one is fond
of hearing during these
friendly gatherings and
one comes together with
those he/she will enjoy
talking to.
Bridge between yesterday
and tomorrow…
It was the value given to art and
artists by almost all Ottoman
sultans that laid the foundations
for Bursa gezeks. Bursa had
always been the capital of the
Ottoman Empire due to many
reasons. Over time, hearts that
enjoy music and who are good
at it found one another. Clerks,
craftsmen, artisans… Many
people from all occupations
came together to form these
friendship, conversation
and music gatherings. In
the beginning, people came
together only for joy during the
gezeks, but over time it started
transforming into an educational
institution. Many musicians
developed themselves thanks
to what they learned here and
started working as part of Turkish
Music.
It gets its name from the
style of the organized
celebrations.
Because
gezeks are carried out with the
house visits of about 40 people
with a love of music. This number
sometimes changes according
to the size of the house they are
visiting and the availability of the
homeowner. There is always a
chairman and his/her associates
in each group. Chairman is
responsible from attaining order,
however every member of the
group also has a function in the
activities. The gezeks that are
organized every week start in the
months of spring and continue
every week for a period of 40
weeks regularly at the house of
a gezek member. Red lamps
hung on the door of the house
constitute one of the oldest
customs of this tradition.

boyunca, her hafta başka bir
gezek üyesinin evinde düzenli
olarak devam ediyor. Bu eski
geleneğin eski adetlerinden
biri de gezeğin düzenlendiği
evin kapısına asılan kırmızı
fenerler. Gelene geçene “Bu
evde gezek meclisi kurulmuştur”
diyen bu kırmızı fener geleneği,
günümüzde gezekleri yaşatmak
için uğraşan gezek üyeleri
tarafından da devam ettiriliyor.
Söz bitsin, saz başlasın
Akşam yemeği saatinin
ardından, gezek meclisinin
toplanacağı evi, kapıdaki,
camdaki ya da balkondaki
kırmızı fenerin rehberliğinde
bulup bir bir gelen gezek
üyeleri, kendilerine sunulan
geniş salonda kendi içlerinde bir
düzen kurarak alıyorlar yerlerini.
Fasıllara katılmayacak olanlar,
dinleyiciler için ayırılan kısımda
oturuyorlar. Başköşe elbette
sazların… Onların yanına
gecenin düzenini sağlamakla
görevli olan hanendeler geçiyor.
Acemiler ve gezekte görev
almayacak olanlar ise en sona.
Sohbetler ediliyor, hatırlar
soruluyor, ikramlar yapılıyor,
yeniliyor, içiliyor. Sazlar söze
girip, mest eden nağmeleriyle
ruhlara dokunmaya
başlamasıyla sohbetler
kesiliveriyor. Bu “Saz başlar, söz
biter” anlamına geliyor.
Meydanlar solistlerin…
Öncelik, o gün için icra
edilmesi önceden kararlaştırılan
makamın peşrevinde. Peşrevi,
yine bu makamdan oluşan
şarkıların söylendiği “Meydan
Faslı” takip ediyor. Üç bölümden
oluşan gezek meclisinin ilk
bölümün bu fasılla ve farklı
sazlardan yapılan taksimlerle
geçiyor. Eskiden ortaoyunu
gösterilerinin yapıldığı, bazen
piyangoların çekildiği aralarda
görevli olan üyeler ev sahibine
yardım ediyor ve ikramlara
geçiliyor. Gezek başkanı,
