kemiklerinin saklandığı
yer, kardinalin son nefesini
verdiği yer olmuştur. Katil
kendilerinden önce gelmiş ve
kardinali öldürerek bu deliğin
içinde yarıya kadar toprağa
gömülü, göğsü damgalanmış
(“earth” ambigramı) ve ağzı
toprakla dolu bir şekilde
boğulmuş olarak bırakmıştır.
İlk kardinali kurtaramamış olan
kahramanlarımız için vakit
daralmaktadır.
Piazza del Popolo
Ünlü Popolo Meydanı sokak
sanatçılarının da uğrak yeri ve
güzel vakit geçirebileceğiniz
bir yer. Kilise, Piazza Del
Popolo Meydanı’nın girişinde
bulunan tarihi kapının hemen
solunda. Meydanın diğer
tarafından bulunan şatafatlı
kiliselere aldanmayın.
Santa Maria Della Popolo
Kilisesi dışarıdan oldukça
gösterişsiz ve kilise olduğu
bile anlaşılmayan bir bina.
Popularitesi de Melekler
ve Şeytanlar’dan sonra
artmış bir durak. Şapelin
iç süslemelerinin Bernini
tarafından tasarlandığını
yazan levhayı görünce
kahramanlarımız şok geçirir.
Çünkü Bernini Vatikan
tarafından korunan özel bir
heykeltıraştır ve neredeyse
ömrünü Vatikan’da geçirmiştir.
Ama levhada apaçık
yazmaktadır. Bu durumda
Aydınlanma Yolu’nu tasarlayan
kişi İlüminati’nin gizli sanatçısı
(meçhul usta) Bernini’nin ta
kendisidir! Katolik şapellerine
sanat eserlerini koyma ve
Aydınlanma Yolu’nu yapma
nüfuzuna sahip olan kişi
ünlü ve imtiyazlı bir Vatikan
sanatçısından başka kim
olabilirdi ki? O halde bilimin
ikinci mihrabının ipucu da
burada olmalıydı. Taşlar yerine
oturuyordu. Elbette. Bernini
tarafından yapılmış “Habakkuk
ve Melek” isimli heykel bu
küçük ve gösterişsiz kilisenin
en bilinen eseriydi. Peygamber
de melek de parmaklarıyla
uzağı ama iki farklı yönü işaret
ediyorlardı. Hangisini takip
edecekleri Diagramma’daki
dörtlüğün son mısrasındaydı:

ediyordu. Güneybatıda
ikinci sembol olan hava ile
ilgili ne olabilirdi ki?
Hemen bir harita getirilir.
Konu Bernini olunca meleğin
parmağının açısının kusursuz
olduğundan şüphe yoktur.
Ancak ilginç bir şekilde
kiliselerle bezeli açık hava
müzesi olan eski şehir
merkezinde haritaya çekilen
çizgi üzerinde Vatikan’a dek
herhangi bir kilise de yoktur.
Langdon sesli bir şekilde
düşünmeye başlar. Aslında
San Pietro da bir kilisedir ama
cinayetler halka açık bir yerde
işlenecektir. Dört preferiti
kardinal kaçırılmış, diğerleri
Sistin Şapel’inde toplanmış ve
adayların olmadığı bir Papa
seçimini sürdürürken teyakkuz
halinde olan Vatikan duvarları

was the best known piece of
this small and modest church.
Both the prophet and the angel
were pointing far away, but in
two different directions. The final
verse of the Diagramma quadrant
would show them who to follow:
Let Angels Guide Thee, On Thy
Lofty Quest. What could be in the
southeast that is related with air,
the second symbol?
A map is fetched instantly.
When Bernini is the case, there
is no doubt that the angle of
the angel’s finger is perfect.
However, interestingly there is no
church until the Vatican along the
line drawn on the old city center.
Langdon starts thinking out
loud. Actually San Pietro is also
a church, but the murders would
be committed at locations open
to public. Four preferiti cardinals
were kidnapped, the others
gathered at the Sistine Chapel
and while the election process
for the Pope was ongoing without
any candidates, the walls of the
vigilant Vatican had to be closed
off to the public. But the line was
passing not through San Pietro
but through the square and
the square was open to public.
However, there is no statue by
Bernini in the square. Indeed,
there was no statue there. There
was only an obelisk in the center
of the square. Did the word
‘Great Pyramid’ represent this
obelisk? Even so, it was not by
Bernini. And it had nothing to do
with ‘air’. What was the poem
saying? “Cross Rome the Mystic
Elements Unfold”. San Pietro
Square was in Vatican city not in
Rome. A guard that is watching
them in silence feels the need to
correct them: “This has always
been a matter of debate. Even
though it is shown on most of
the maps as if it belongs to the
Vatican, there are actually many
people who claim that it belongs
to Rome since it is outside the
city walls.” The same guard tells
them that he has remembered
something about the square
that he knows by heart since
he has been working there for
many years. Not a statue, but
an elliptic relief on the ground
with the depiction of the face
of an angel blowing air. Stones
have fallen in place. There is no
statue but Bernini has proven his
genius once again by placing a
relief that is accepted as being
half the statue: the “West Wind”
that is also known as the “Breath
of God”. Yes, this relief is the
symbol of the second element
“air”: the Breath of God. The
second mihrab of science has
been placed on the square right
in front of the largest church in
the world as if challenging it.
But how could one go about
murdering a prefereti cardinal
right in front of the live
broadcasting camera on a
square packed with thousand of
Catholics expecting to hear the
results of the election? When they
arrive at the square, Langdon
thinks that Hashashin might give
up but then he hears the cry of
a little girl and realizes that he is
wrong. The murderer has brought
the cardinal all the way to the
Obelisk dressing him up as a
homeless and he has pinned a
hole in both lungs of the cardinal
causing him to die for lack of
“air” who has already fainted
due to the pain he felt when the
ambigram was stamped on his
chest.
