square kilometers and which
will take you a whole day, we
might go over to Rome following
the footsteps of our heroes.
The cardinals will be killed at
places where the symbols of
the foundations of science are
located and thus the message
will be delivered. Our hero says
this in the novel: “There has been
a deep chasm between science
and religion since the beginning
of history. Outspoken scientists
like Copernicus were killed by the
church because they declared
scientific truths. Religion always
oppressed science. A group
of scientists fought against
the church in Rome during
the 1500’s. Some of the most
enlightened individuals of Italy
– physicists, mathematicians,
astronomers – started to meet
secretly to share their concern
about the erroneous teaching
of the church. They were afraid
that the monopoly of the church
on ‘truth’ would prevent the
academic enlightenment in the
world. They called themselves
the ‘illuminated ones’ and thus
formed the first scientific brain
team in the world: Illuminati.
The most well trained minds of
Europe devoted themselves to
the search for the scientific truth.
They were ruthlessly hunted by
the Catholic Church. Scientists
could stay alive only due to
their scrupulousness regarding
secrecy. What was told secretly
spread around the academic
circles and the brotherhood of
the Illuminati grew by acquiring
new academics from all over
Europe. Scientists met regularly
at a great secret shelter they
called the Church of Illumination.”
He thinks that Galileo founded
the Church of Illumination for
these mysterious meetings and
that they need to find the path to
this church hidden by a master
with an unknown name via coded
signs. Langdon comes across
this quadrant by Galileo in the
Vatican archives in the work
entitled “Diagramma” which
was censored by the church:
“From Santi’s Earthly Tomb with
Demon’s Hole. Cross Rome the
Mystic Elements Unfold. The Path
of Light is Laid, the Sacred Test.
Let Angels Guide Thee, On Thy
Lofty Quest.”
Pantheon
The surname of Raffaello who
became famous with his first
name was Sanzio or Santi. Dr.
Langdon realizes right away
that the Santi mentioned in the
first sentence of the quadrant
is Raffaello, the famous artist
of the time. Raffaello’s tomb is
located at the Pantheon which
is the oldest spiritual structure
in Rome. In addition, there is a
gap on the dome of the Pantheon
for letting the sun light in. What
else could the demon’s hole be?
We can change our path to the
Pantheon. It is time to get out of
the Vatican, cross the Tiber river
and get lost in the magnificent
streets of Rome. Turn off your
cell phone and spend a few
hours by getting lost recklessly
with only a camera in your hands
and don’t worry for all roads will
take you to a central location
with a magnificent taste on your
mouth just like all roads lead to
Rome. I will not try to guide you
