point of the symbols of lock,
love and bridge and it binds and
keeps two objects together. In
addition, the fact that the key
to the padlock can be thrown
into the river makes the bridges
even more superior. That is why
reactions continued to increase
against suggestions that did
not have the same meaning.
Meanwhile, the precautions
taken by the officials started
to increase. While all these
debates were ongoing, a 2,4
meter section of the Pont des
Arts Bridge, which is one of the
most beautiful bridges of Paris,
collapsed on June 10, 2014
because of the weight of the
padlocks it carried. This incident
strengthened the arguments
of the officials. Laws started to
be issued in countries where
padlocks were common banning
their use with less and less
tolerance.
I saw this padlock culture
at Rome, Florance, Davis
(California), San Francisco,
Brooklyn Bridge (New York) and
Botany Park (Bursa) after Venice
and I took pictures of them.
One year ago, I saw that the
padlocks on the Brooklyn Bridge
with many different life stories
and cultures behind them were
removed. I felt resentment inside.
I witnessed the replacement of
padlocks with graffiti, bits of cloth
or various other similar things
symbolizing the different wishes.
Now there was a padlock free
bridge in New York for all those
people who come from all over
the world to walk on and take
pictures of. It was then that I
read a suggestion proposed by
those who support padlocks in
a magazine. The suggestion to
build a a museum to display the
removed padlocks seemed like a
very cute idea to me. I still believe
that the collection of padlocks
carrying with them the wishes of
different lives and loves to live
together forever is a wonderful
idea for a museum.
