actors when they saw them on
the road where they parked the
spaceship. However, the first
episode that aired gave no signs
as to its future success. Because
the first episode was aired on
the day of the assassination of
John F. Kennedy and there was
no way it would be viewed. And
that’s what happened. But when
some time passed it was decided
to re-launch the series. It had
been difficult enough to create
Tardis, attractive characters
and stories in spite of all the
technical difficulties and the
series deserved at least one more
chance. This chance became the
turning point for Doctor Who. The
authority figure of the first doctor
probably due to its age was well
received and soon people of all
ages were hooked in front of the
screen. He was a hero that the
children wished was real. The
fan group known as “Whovians”
became the first fan group name
in history that found its place
in a dictionary and in time it
transformed into a phenomenon
that shook the whole world. This
phenomenon continues today
with the same love and interest
resulting in the manufacturing
of toys and costumes from the
heroes and villains of the series.
There are even stores with the
name “Tardis” at various places
in the world. Doctor Who entered
the “Guinness Book of World
Records” as the longest lasting
science-fiction series in the
world and continued to be aired
even after the granddaughter of
the first doctor, Susan Foreman
left the series. The Doctor had
chosen a police cottage from
the 50s for the exterior design
of Tardis which he defined as
“a miracle inside a miracle”.
Because it could be easily
“parked” and it was not very
striking.
The problems the first doctor had
due to his age in real life almost
caused the series to end. But this
was not possible, because Doctor
Who was the representative of
hope that all the world needed.
It was not a character that
depended on the health or
existence of the actor who played
it. There was only one way. Giving
the Time Lord another ability that
would enable him to “regenerate”
and cheat death. Thanks to
this transformation, Patrick
Troughton received the flag from
the first doctor in 1966. Hence,
Doctor Who changed 13 times
in 50 years including the “War
Doctor” that we learned of during
the 50th anniversary special
episode. Each change, each
new actor became even more
problematic for the partners and
the loyal “Whovians”. Everyone
gave promises not to adopt to
the new doctor following each
transformation. But according to
the philosophy of Dr. Who, it did
not matter what a human or an
alien looked like and what they
resembled; the important thing
was what they carried inside.
The Doctor was loved even more
thanks to this philosophy. 10th
Doctor David Tennant became
one of the longest lasting and
the most loved of all. Matt Smith
came later and he thought that
things would be very difficult
for him. Matt Smith quit Doctor
Who during a special episode
aired in 2014 and the face we
saw after the regeneration that
occurred in this episode was that
of Peter Capaldi. This caused all
Whovians to focus on one thing.
Doctor Who managed to continue
a dream for 50 years with the
same excitement and love that
kept on increasing every day. He
helped all people and aliens he
met along the way. He sometimes
faced death, but continued to
resist his enemies never once
thinking of himself. One mystery
of the doctor was thus revealed.
His wife, his daughter, the soul
of Tardis, his twin in a parallel
universe… Doctor Who became
a phenomenon that has been
passed down from generation
to generation. The only question
that the followers who gave
no compromise about their
factualism is: “What if one day
they finish the series?” Whereas
those who have preferred to leave
themselves to the magical world
of the doctor are asking: “What if
Doctor Who is not real?”
