Ghazi statue and Ataturk
Monument
The statue depicted Ataturk in
marshal uniform on a horse. His
right forefinger pointed at the
West and symbolised Turkey
on the way to civilisation. “Oh
Turk, who stands before hereby
glorious statue! Bow respectfully!
He is Mustafa Kemal who saved
his nation, founded the Republic
and wrote a new history,” read
the inscription in front of the
statue. At the inauguration,
the huge Turkish flag covering
the statue was unveiled by the
Governor and “Ghazi Statue,” as
it was called back then, became
a heritage of Bursa. After the
Surname Act, this historical
monument was named “Ataturk
Statue”. It was unveiled on 29
October 1931, in presence of
Bursa public in enthusiasm,
pride and joy. 7 years later, tears
surrounded the monument. After
the funeral of “Eternal Chief,”
all people of Bursa gathered in
front of the monument. Children,
adults, youth and the elderly…
That day, Bursa shared the grief
of entire country and took an
oath of loyalty to Ataturk, before
speaking with a single voice:
“We, the Turkish youth, swear
upon our honour and Turkishness
that we will forever abide by the
unique heritage of our Ata, his
Republic, reforms, his powerful
and potent regime, that we will
sacrifice our blood and life for the
land and independence of our
fatherland.” In a visit to the city,
“Turkish youth shall ceaselessly
and tirelessly proceed to the
cause, to our high ideal. We will
be glad to see this,” Ataturk had
said. This country, which was
founded with devotion, courage
and belief of honourable Turkish
nation, as well as the souvenirs,
ideas and principles of Ataturk,
were now entrusted to Turkish
youth who would never deviate
from the path of their Ata.
Mustafa Kemal Ataturk always
had a deep connection with
Bursa and left behind valuable
memories. Indeed, his final
visit to the city was his most
colourful trip before his demise.
His endless energy, power, and
farewell that befitted his dignity,
left sad but profound traces in
Bursa. Traces of Ataturk in Bursa
made their way among most
honourable memories of the city.
