enter the island is actually Saint
Panteleimon Church that was
used for prayers until the years of
population exchange. This Greek
Orthodox Church was built in
the 19th century as a dedication
to Saint Gorgias which was
reorganized by the Nilüfer
Municipality in accordance with
the original. The building was
used for different purposes after
the population exchange and
experienced significant damages
due to fires and the passage of
time. Today, the church has been
born again out of its ashes and
it was put into service last year
as a center of culture following
renovation works. The house
near this old church and the
new house of culture was also
restored during the process.
The house was restored as a
residence for writers where
writers and translators can come
and work while admiring the
impeccable scenery of Gölyazı
as a source of inspiration. “Göl
Yazıevi” was opened last year
following a ceremony to which
various national and international
writers participated and the first
guests of the house were Asa
Lind, Ali Arda, Alberto Maguel
and Doğan Hızlan.
Gölyazı continuously organizes
activities, festivities and festivals
and this year another old friend
is smiling again. The patience of
an old windmill patiently awaiting
its fate was rewarded this year.
There are only a few windmills
in Turkey similar to the one in
Gölyazı the restoration of which
was completed last month. The
construction of this windmill
was initiated in Samsun by one
of the two windmill masters
in Turkey. During this period,
the effects on the windmill of
interventions carried out were
cleared and the windmill was
repaired in accordance with
its original structure. Wooden
parts from Samsun were added
to the windmill at Gölyazı thus
reintegrating to Gölyazı a value of
touristic and historic importance.
