Narcissus, Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio
güzelliğinin farkında, alımlı,
ifadeli, nazlı bir kadın gibidir.
Her çiçeğin olduğu gibi,
Nergis’in de verildiği kişiye
ilettiği bir mesajı bir de
efsanesi vardır. “Çok güzelsin”
demenin en sessiz ve güzel
kokulu yolu olan Nergis’in
efsanesinin kahramanları
avcı Narkissos ve peri kızı
Echo’dur. Echo, Narkissos’u
gördüğü anda ona âşık olur.
Ancak aşkına bir karşılık
bulamayıp günden güne erir,
kara sevda ile yok olup, ölür.
Vücudu kayalara karışır, sesi
yankılara dönüşür. Olimpos’un
tanrıları Narkissos’un bu
davranışına kızarak, onu
cezalandırmaya karar verirler.
Narkissos’un cezası, kendi
güzelliği olacaktır. Nehir
kenarında yüzünü yıkarken
suda gördüğü yansımasını
görüp gözünü ayıramaz ve
yemeden içmeden kesilerek
kendini izlemeye başlar. Tıpkı
Echo’nun Narkissos’a duyduğu
aşk gibi bir aşkla vurulur
gördüğü güzelliğe. Asla
kavuşamayacağı, elini uzatsa
dokunamayacağı birine,
kendine. Kendi görüntüsünü
izlediği suyun kenarında
günden güne erimeye başlar
o da. Ömrü oracıkta tükenir ve
vücudu çiçeklere dönüşür.
Bir başka efsanede ise
arındırıcı suların bekçi perisi
Liriope’nin oğlu olarak
doğar Narsis. Doğumundaki
kehanete göre, ömrü

Narsis bir gün nehirdeki
yansımasıyla karşılaşır ve
bulunduğu yere kök salıp
bir Nergis’e dönüşene kadar
kendini seyreder. Dönüştüğü
çiçek güneş gibi, sarı göbekli,
beyaz yapraklı, güzel kokular
saçan bir çiçektir. Kendini
beğenmişlik anlamına gelen
“Narsisizm”in simgesi Nergis.

Like every flower, Narcissus
also has a message it delivers
to the person it is given as well
as a legend. Narcissus is the
most silent and the best scented
means of saying “You are
beautiful” and the heroes of its
legend are the hunter Narcissus
and the nymph Echo. Echo falls
in love with Narcissus at first
sight. However, her love is not
reciprocated and over time she
dies. Her body is lost amidst the
rocks and her sound turns into
echoes. The gods of Olympos
decide to punish Narcissus in
return. His punishment would be
his own beauty. When he sees
his own reflection on the surface
of the water as he is washing
his face, he cannot take his
eyes away and starts watching
himself thus slowly wasting away
in unfulfilled yearning. He falls in
love with the beauty he sees in
the reflection, just like the love of
Echo for Narcissus. In love with
someone he can never reach
or touch; with himself. Thus he
starts wasting away near the
river bank where he saw his own
reflection. His life ends there and
his body turns into flowers.
In yet another legend, Narcissus
is born as the son of Liriope, the
guardian nymph of cleansing
waters. According to a prophecy
during his birth, he will continue
to live until he sees himself.
Who can stop fate? One day
Narcissus sees his own reflection
on the surface of the river and
starts watching himself without
moving away until he takes root
there thus transforming into the
Narcissus plant. The plant he
transforms into is a yellow one
with white leaves and a beautiful
scent. Narcissus, which is the
