Ya da ikiye bölündüğünde
parçaları birbirine hatasız
şekilde eşit bir nesnenin
dengeli, orantılı, düzgün
duruyor oluşu bilinçaltına
sebebini açıklayamadığımız
türden huzur sinyalleri
gönderir. Bakıldığında mutluluk
veren bu cisimlerden özellikle
simetri konusunda takıntılı
kişiler henüz kendilerinin
bile tanımlayamadıkları bir
keyif alırlar. Tertipli, düzenli
biri olabilirsiniz ama tam
anlamıyla bir “simetri”
bağımlısı değilseniz tadına
varamayacağınız bir keyiftir
bu. Belki ancak simetri
takıntısı olan aynı yumurta ikizi
kardeşlerin duyabileceği ama
kolay kolay tarif edemeyeceği,
nedenini kendilerinin bile
bilmediği türden bir mutluluk…

Aslında dünya, birçoğumuzun
farkında bile olmadığı ama
simetri takıntılıların gözüne
yansıyan rahatsız edici
detaylarla dolu… Belki
ailemizde, arkadaş çevremizde
ya da sandığımızdan bile
çok daha yakınımızdadır

simetrinin bilimsel tarifi?
İsim olarak simetrinin tanımı
“iki veya daha çok şey
arasında konum, biçim ve
belirli bir eksene göre ölçü
uygunluğu”, matematikte
ise “eksen olarak anılan bir
doğrudan, benzer noktaları
karşılıklı olarak aynı uzaklıkta
bulunan iki benzer parçanın
birbirine göre olan durumu”
şeklinde geçiyor. Tam tersi ise
“asimetri”, Türkçedeki haliyle
“bakışımsızlık”. Simetri insanın
doğasında önemli bir yeri
olan iyilik, kötülük, derinlik,
sığlık, güzellik, çirkinlik
gibi birbirine zıt kavramları
içine alıyor. Örneğin,
simetrinin şekil ve pozisyon
benzerliğine dayandığının en
net kanıtlarından biri, insan
vücudundaki sağ ve sol
taraflarda benzer ve birbirine
eşit olarak bulunan organlar.
Symmetry is an ambiguous
perfection that is difficult to
describe. Two objects that are
aligned to the point of perfection
may sometimes be the reason
for the unexpected smile on
our faces. Or the balanced,
proportional and well-rounded
appearance of an object the
parts of which fit perfectly when
divided in two sends some
unexplainable signals of peace
to our subconscious. These
objects provide happiness and
joy to people who are obsessed
with symmetry that is difficult to
understand even for them. You
can be organized and neat but if
you are not really obsessed with
“symmetry” you cannot enjoy it
as much. A kind of happiness
that maybe only maternal twins
can feel but would find it difficult
to explain since even they would
not know the reason why…
The reflection of your face on
the mirror is the symmetry of
your face. It is in the stance of
your hand against the other.
Symmetry is also the response
of the happiness one finds in
meeting the soul mate that is
believed to be living somewhere
in this world. The symmetry
that reflects you, your other
half that you are bound to with
a soothing love and unending
endearment, your soul mate.
Symmetry is a state of perfect
equality, an immaculate reflection
that is engraved on one’s mind
upon first glance. It is also
indispensable for photographers.
It means catching the reflection
of the sky on the water, taking
the picture of someone lost in
thought while looking at his/
her reflection in the mirror and
obtaining perfect natural shots
that one can attain only through
complex technical procedures.
It is also a severe obsession.
Unorganized spaces are
nightmarish for those afflicted
with this disease. Those who
ruminate over the patterns of
the rug on the floor, who cannot
bear to sit in the same room with
shelves of books that are not in
alphabetical order or those who
cannot help but draw a line right
in the middle of whatever they
see to check if the two sides are
equal or not… Actually, the world
is full of discomforting details
that most of us are not aware of
but which grab the attention of
those obsessed with symmetry…
Maybe they are in our family,
among our friends or much
closer to us than we think. People
obsessed with symmetry to the
extent that they are disturbed
by their own reflection in the
mirror or who are put off from
life when they feel that one of
their shoes is tighter or looser
than the other. So, what is the
scientific definition of “symmetry”
that has been incorporated
into our language from French
that affects people so much so
that they need to seek medical
treatment?
Symmetry as a word is defined
as, “the agreement in one or
more objects according to
a certain position, form and
axis,” whereas in mathematics
it is defined as, “the status
with respect to each other of
two similar objects that are
equidistant from an axis”.
The opposite is “asymmetry”.
Symmetry covers opposite
concepts that are important in
the nature of humans such as
good, evil, depth, shallowness,
beauty, ugliness etc. For
example, the clearest proof that
symmetry is based on similarity
in shape and position is the
position of the organs in the
right and left sides of a human
body. This falls into the category
of “geometrical symmetry”.
“Reflection symmetry” is
another category meaning
that the two sides of an object
or shape are exactly equal
when divided into two from the
middle. For instance, the two
sides of the letters “M”, “H”
or “T” are reflections of each
other when divided from the
middle. Symmetry has entered
our lives as a kind of obsession
for order and it has various
scales as well as different
functional definitions when we
consider it from a scientific
perspective. In mathematics,
the appearance of an object
should not change when it is
subject to a certain procedure
to make it symmetrical. It can
be observed by various means
such as scaling, mirroring or
rotating according to a volumetric
relationship or the passage of
time. Symmetry can be evaluated
from three different perspectives
and in mathematics it is clearly
