“terraryum (terrarium)” tam da
böyle bir ihtiyacı karşılamak,
insanı doğa ile buluşturmak
için ortaya çıkan dâhiyane bir
buluş.
Terraryum İngilizce “arazi”
anlamına gelen “terrain”
kelimesinden türemiş bir ifade.
İçinde, bu şekilde bakılmaya
uygun bitkiler ve hayvanlar
yetiştirilen hatta yeterince
geniş bir kap temin edilip bir
parça sulu alan da katılarak
“paludarium”a (deniz ya
da göl kenarı simülasyonu)
dönüştürülebilen bir tür
doğa simülasyonu. Madem
siz tropik bitkilerin, egzotik
hayvanların yaşadığı yerlere
gidemiyorsunuz o halde
öncelikli olarak boyutlarına
karar vereceğiniz bir arazi
oluşturarak onların size
gelmesini sağlayabilirsiniz.
Terraryum son birkaç yıldır
dilimize dolanmış olsa
da aslında ilk kez 1800’lü
yıllarda ortaya çıkan bir
ifade. Londra’da, doğaya
olan düşkünlüğü ile tanınan
Nathaniel Ward adındaki
bir doktorun, yetiştirdiği
bitkilerini soludukları havanın
kirliliğinden korumak için
tesadüfen bulduğu bir bitki
koruma yöntemi. İster avuç
içi kadar bir kâse kullanabilir,
isterseniz bakmaya karar
verdiğiniz bitki ya da hayvanın
ihtiyaçlarını karşılayacak
büyüklükte camdan bir
alan oluşturabilirsiniz.
Boyutları belirledikten sonra
yapmanız gereken yine içinde
yetiştirmeyi veya beslemeyi
düşündüğünüz bitki ya da
hayvana göre tercih etmeniz
gereken taban toprağı ve ısı
derecesi.
Terraryumunuzda bitki
yetiştirmek istiyorsanız hangi
bitkilerin bu tür bir ortam
için daha uygun olduğunu
da bilmeniz gerekiyor. Tabi
aynı durum hayvanlar için
de geçerli. Örneğin bitkiler
arasında arapsaçı, fitonya
benzeri bitkiler, küçük boydaki
eğrelti otları, Japon şemsiyesi;
hayvanlar için de hamster,
iguana, kurbağa, kaplumbağa,
bukalemun, yılan gibi
sürüngenler tercih edilebiliyor.
Şeker kavanozundan eski bir
akvaryuma, geniş bir cam
şişeden bir yemek masası
boyutlarındaki bir camekâna
kadar her şeyi terraryum için
kullanabilir; evinizin ya da
ofisinizin içinde küçük bir
dünya kurabilirsiniz. Çünkü
terraryum mantık olarak
içinde canlıların yaşayabildiği
bir ortam ve dünyanınkine
benzer bir sisteme sahip.

Whereas others think that it is
quite early for such a dramatic
change and decide to bring
nature back to their homes, rear
gardens or offices. “Terrarium”
is the latest trend of recent times
and it is a stroke of genius to
meet just such a demand and to
unite men with nature.
Terrarium is a word that is
coined after the word “terrain”
meaning “land” in English. It is
a simulation of nature in which
one can grow suitable plants and
animals and even transform it
into a “paludarium” (simulation
of a sea or lake) by acquiring
a large enough container and
adding some wetland. If you
cannot go where tropical plants
and exotic animals live, you
can make them come to you by
establishing a plot of land the
dimensions of which are up to
you.
Even though terrarium has
become popular in the last
couple of years, it is actually an
expression that first emerged
in the 1800s. It is a plant
preservation method that was
accidentally discovered by
Nathaniel Ward, a nature loving
doctor in London who wished
to protect the plants he planted
from the pollution of the air
they were exposed to. You can
either use a cup as small as
your palm or build a glass space
that is large enough to meet the
demands of the plant or animal
you wish to look after. After
deciding on the dimensions, all
you have to do is to select the
soil base and the temperature
in accordance with the plant or
animal you wish to grow.
You have to know which plants
are better suited to such
environments if you wish to
grow plants in your terrarium.
The same goes for animals as
well. For example, plants such
as baby’s tear, fittonia or short
ferns and cyperus are preferred
whereas reptiles such as
hamsters, iguana, frogs, turtles,
chameleons, snakes are animals
that are preferred. Everything
can be used as terrarium from
a candy jar to an old aquarium,
from a wide enough bottle to a
glass that is the size of a dinner
table; you can build up a small
world in your house or your
office. Because, terrarium has
an environment in which living
things can survive as well as a
system that is similar to that of
the world. A carbon cycle takes
place when you put together the
right material and close off the
lid. You can set up a terrarium
with your own efforts or get help
from professionals and creative
designers who are interested in
